Hi Ron, Fred has done a nice job, but they appear to be heavily influenced by WW2 style aircraft. The best place to see near perfect examples of wing root fairings is on gliders. The examples I have seen are similar but smaller. Any speed improvement in cruise comes from sealing the gap, not the fairing. What you should see an improvement in is climb and l/d ratio at best speed. This is because induced drag is a much larger component at these speeds, where as parasitic drag is a larger component in cruise. With that said, they are definitely worthwhile and they are on the long list of crap that I will ultimately put on my airplane Cheers, Paul On Tue, Sep 21, 2010 at 9:23 PM, wrote: > Hi Paul > > What's your take on Fred Kleins wing root fairings? > > Graham said this: > Fred > looks good to me, have a look at the fillet I did 10 years ago, not > perfect and I think yours will be better. > Ted Gladstone claims 4 kts I think. > Just remember the wing root flexes up and down a couple or three mm. so > the fairing must be flexible.
