Hurricane Irene came to visit me on the North Shore of Long Island.
I lost power at my home and it's looking like the Power Company may not restore it very soon.
Time to put the battery charger to practical use!
I stopped by the hangar and all is well including power (and computer).
Y11-08-29

**First off I borrowed two 9aH AGM Lead Acid batteries form my build partner Wayne
**I put the two AGM batteries in parallel and gave them a full charge from 12.8V each, charging them off the battery charger.
FYI:
100% charge is 12.8V
75% charge is 12.6V
50% charge is 12.4V
25% charge is 12.0V
This measurement should be done after at least 2 hours sitting to get a true reading.
Anyway these batteries were both at 12.8V. It took me ~ 45 minutes total (with some rest breaks) to top them
**Once the batteries were topped, I made a down and dirty portable light
**The batteries for the camera were Delta Peak charged from the battery on the battery charger using an Astroflight charger. The AstroFlight charger runs off of 12V.
**All the pictures in this album were taken with batteries charged from the battery charger, there was no flash used, just the two portable lights with those batteries charged from the battery charger as well.

I have quite a bit of time on this one. No comparison to the 8 watt units though.
I use it to make my way a the battery lights.
They have two Lithium batteries and a switch to keep them on. Cost is $1.00 from Best Hong Kong. If you buy 1000 of them price is $.50
Just the batteries from Rat Shack are many many times the $1.00 cost.
They have a flat on one side very conducive to putting a sticker on.
I knurled the full length bar, then cut it off a little oversized and faced it in the lathe to the proper dimension.
The fluid use is a water soluable cutting fluid. if I don't use the machine for a few weeks the fluid dries up and leaves behind a gummy coating that glues the hose to the last shape it was in. A bit of a pain because you need to break free every joint to get limbered up. It only takes about 5 minutes, but the anticipation of knowing you need to do it before you can make chips has to be controled so one dos not lose momentum on a project.
It was made in 1941 and I am sure helped win World War 2 for the US!
It is a remarkable machine even in todays standards as far as hand machines go.
It has a 5 horse power 3 phase 220v AC motor that drives a DC generator. They did some electrical hocus pocus that even if I read up on it it is hard to understand, but bottom line is it has a variable RPM control and at low RPMs it still has a lot of torque! I have a home made rotophase and I generate my own three phase power, that is when the power company is supplying me power!
