Now in situation I can check over center with a thin straight edge.
If there is too much over center on the LG08s, in the event of a bad bounce LG08s will try and straighten out when the swingarm and associated have a down movement. In other words instead of having an up force on swingarm, now there will be a downforce which will try and straighten LG08s to be on center which will try and push aft and load LG12 lever. If there is too much over center, Graham is saying it could cause LG12 lever to bend in this bounce scenario.
I would imagine using the old style shock absorber that didn't use dampers, the rebound jolt of a violent bounce would put more stress on LG12 lever than with dampers??
Click "Download Document" below.
Some things to check to prevent unwanted gear retract:
**Both LG08s are over center by ~ 1/16", no more than 1/8".
**LG08 to gear lever joint is solid with no play. I scuff sanded and Reduxed, reamed holes and used NAS hardware where I could. I also installed angle bracket to better attach LG08 to gear lever (I think mod 51? could be wrong number of mod).
**Make sure gear lever is pushing LG08 plenty hard against stops with no free play. I was not thrilled with just the aluminium guide acting as the down position cut out when I was Reduxed a piece of Tufnal and bolted it to the underside of the tunnel, I added an additional piece of G-10 to get tension just right (filling in any gaps with Redux/Flox). Here is one pic:
You can find a few more pics in this album:
**Make sure your down latch can't get stuck in the up position. I installed a spring that works great. You can see I installed a reed switch in the tunnel and a magnet in the down latch to signal my gear annunciator:
Gear collapse waiting to happen. One was just at center and the other under center. Needed to grind stops where the cap on the tube was complete gone. Purchased from McMaster some hard durometer polyurethane rod that was Reduxed into tube for correct length, then made a tube that went on OD of tube out of 4130 that is bout 1/16" shorter. Then put a 3/16" screw through whole mess to make sure. Thus there is a slight cushioning but max. overcenter things could go is 1/16". Look up in archives details from Ron Parigoris and Steve D. on subject.
