We recently started using our Long Range tank. It works fine but there are two
drawbacks. First, there is a fair amount of fuel that can't be siphoned and second,
the siphon is pretty slow so Jim always wonders and worries if it is really working.

At Rough River Kevin Klinefelter showed us his installation which uses a 914
Piersburg fuel pump. He uses the pump to get all the fuel from the LR tank into the
main tank. He has timed how long it takes, so runs the pump for that long after he
has used 10 gallons out of the main tank.

That seemed like a good idea. But the Piersburg pump is expensive, isn't designed
to lift gas and isn't designed to run dry.

We found an electric diaphragm style pump that is designed for this type of
application. It is a Walbro FRC-8-2 pump available from www.ase-supply.com.
Attached is a photo of our install. It works great! The pump is quiet and has a
built in inlet filter. We have a 12V socket on the flat portion of the D panel that
we plug it into.

By using a long inlet hose and sticking the outlet hose in the LR tank filler, we
can also use this pump to fill the LR tank without spilling gas inside the cockpit.

Hi Jim and Heather,
That's a nice looking pump installation.
How do you know when the fuel transfer has been completed?
I would like a simple way being notified that the pump has run dry and the
fuel transfer complete. As you said, I time it, and also look back at the
clear hose and see air bubbles, but I have to remember !
So the pump you are useing does not mind running dry, how will you tell when
transfer is complete?
By the way, at RR and on the way back to CA I took the LR tank out and went
to the local gas station for auto fuel. I can reinstall the 10 gallon tank
by myself, not too bad.
It sure was nice to meet you folks at RR.
