I am thinking to perhaps Redux in a piece of G-10 that will serve as a lever guard and also strengthen the compromised glass.
Then cover seam between the G-10 guard and the cover with 3 thin plies of model aeroplane cloth, (.010" thick, about the same as 1 BID).
The G-10 would be butt against this just installed cover.
