Tri-Gear Conversion

After being blown off the runway on takeoff and into a ground loop at 40 kts, it has been decided to convert the aircraft from Monowheel to Tri-gear. This album documents this conversion and repair work. The album is not comprehensive as I often was up to my elbows in epoxy, fiberglas, Araldite and other nasty things when I would have wanted a picture or two. Still, you should be able to get an idea of what was involved. Work has almost been completed. The aircraft is flying again. Remaining work is to make interference fairings for the landing gear leg fairings to the wheel pants and body. I'll put the wheel pants on tomorrow and see how it goes. Without any go-fast fairings it does 110 KTS at 5000 RPM, 28 in MP & 3.6 gph.

2010 09 14 - The aircraft on the trailer at the hotel ready for an early morning departure. The brace on the rudder proved to be a negative and was removed at the first stop. The rudder was also removed and strapped to the trailer. Thanks to Tommy Meye

2010 10 18 No pics of unloading the Europa at home hanger. But a few days later I had the making for two new work benches to be constructed for the hanger. This is one of the work benches.

And the second work bench with the port wing in place and ready for work. Took a long day to build the benches but they are worth all the effort.

2010 10 16 - Since I had to replace the pitot/static tube anyway, I decided to make up a spacer to get the mount flush with the wing surface.

2010 10 20 While in Florida, I had Bud go over the aircraft to see what issues he could find. One issue was the lack of spar pin reinforcements when the cockpit module was built.

I've gone back to the build manual and made up a pair of reinforcements. Here marking where the upholstery will be cut to make a place for them.
